When are Veneers Advisable?

Veneers are thin sheaths of dental-grade porcelain used to enhance a smile’s appearance. As one of the several cosmetic dental procedures available, many wonder when a veneer would be preferable to bonding, crowns, or other treatments. Porcelain veneers are an ideal esthetic improvement in several different circumstances, and our Bellflower dentist can help you find out if you are in one of these situations.

The Structure of the Tooth

A tooth that is going to receive a veneer has to be permanently altered in order for the treatment plan to work. The enamel has to be shaved down slightly to create enough room for the prosthetic. Otherwise, the prosthetic will feel too bulky and uncomfortable to be an effective option.

For this reason, the tooth’s structure must be completely healthy before a veneer can be placed. If any restorative work must be done on a tooth that could have otherwise benefitted from a veneer, then a crown has to be used instead.

Improving a Tooth’s Color and Uniformity

Chips and superficial cracks can leave a tooth with an undesirable appearance. These changes may draw unwanted attention due to the fact that the affected tooth looks distinct from the rest of the smile. Similarly, a smile’s aesthetic can be affected by a tooth that appears darker as a result of genetic and medical factors that permanently change its shade from the inside. Unlike staining that is a result of poor oral hygiene, drinking coffee, or smoking, internal stains cannot be lifted by teeth whitening products; the tooth can often only become brighter by concealing the discoloration.

A porcelain veneer is a preferable cosmetic solution for teeth that are chipped, misshapen, internally discolored, or affected by a combination of these situations. The prosthetic completely covers these issues, making the shape of the tooth uniform with the rest of the smile and returning it to a brilliant shade of white.

Fixing Minor Gaps

Sometimes, a tooth will be narrower than its neighbors or may be slightly crooked. Both circumstances create a small, yet noticeable, gap between teeth that do not need a treatment as extensive as braces to correct. Porcelain veneers are an appropriate alternative to fix minuscule gaps in the smile. The width of the tooth is increased by having the prosthetic, closing the gap.
