Healthy Practices To Maintain Good Oral Health

Good oral hygiene is the practice of taking care of your teeth and mouth to prevent any dental issues. It helps you achieve healthy teeth and gums. It also prevents bad breath and gum disease.

Healthy Practices To Maintain Good Oral Health

  • Brush and floss your teeth regularly

You should brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Brushing removes plaque from your teeth. Plaque is harmful because it creates cavities. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth where brushing can't reach.

  • Visit your dentist regularly

The American Dental Association recommends having your teeth professionally cleaned and examined at least twice a year. This helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease, both of which are very common and can lead to serious oral and overall health concerns. During these visits, your dentist also performs dental cleaning that helps keep your mouth clean and keep you away from any potential dental problems.

  • Maintain a healthy diet

No food is inherently bad for your teeth. However, it's important to be mindful of what you eat and how often you consume it. Try to limit your consumption of foods that are high in sugar, especially sticky foods, such as candy and caramel, which can be difficult to clean from your teeth.

  • Quit smoking and avoid alcohol

Smoking and drinking can both lead to gum disease. You can reduce your chances of developing gum disease if you avoid tobacco and alcoholic beverages. Cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are linked to oral cancer as well.

In addition to reducing your risk of oral cancer, quitting smoking and limiting your alcohol intake will also improve your overall health and well-being.

  • Use mouthguards when playing sports

Athletic mouthguards are comfortable, custom-made dental appliances that protect the teeth from traumatic blows and injuries. The teeth, gums, jaw, and surrounding tissues are defended by athletic mouthguards. Patients of all ages can benefit from mouthguards, which reduce the potential for broken teeth and knocked-out teeth.

  • Wear a night guard

A night guard is a plastic mouthpiece that you wear over your teeth while you sleep. Nightguards are useful because they prevent the wear of your teeth while you sleep, which can prevent issues such as tooth grinding, jaw clenching, and TMJ issues.
